Meet August, the pretty necklace that I made for a special Mother's Day order. It includes all of my current favourite trends - braids, rhinestones, and draped messy metal. I hope you like it too!

DIY Friday: Great Gatsby Inspired Bracelet

I whipped up this retro little number after re-reading my Great Gatsby jewelry post.  I ordered a bunch of these pretty little rhinestone connectors and couldn't wait to start putting them to use. I decided to use the pink and gold gems with a double strand of gold chain on each side. To complete the Gatsby look, I added a gold chain tassel in the middle of the bracelet. The result is a fun, feminine, and totally flapper appropriate bracelet. Now if only we could still have parties like Gatsby's...

I can't wait to see this story come to life on the big screen and will definitely wear my Gatsby bracelet to the movie. Will you be checking out The Great Gatsby?

Get the Look: The Great Gatsby

My book club is tonight and this month we read The Great Gatsby. Somehow this book slipped past me as mandatory reading in High School so I was thrilled that it was chosen as one of our books for the year. The book was fabulous and I couldn't help but imagine the fashion and jewelry that the ladies would have been wearing to Gatsby's parties. The previews for the movie definitely helped in my visualization and I cannot wait to see the story brought to life on the big screen.

I found this photo of Carey Mulligan dressed as Daisy Buchanan on the cover of Vogue and may have squealed at the all of the vintage, art deco jewelry she has piled on.

How to Get The Great Gatsby Look

Pearls
Nothings screams 'the roaring '20s' like layers of pearls. Look for stacked strands for both wrists and necks. If looking to invest in a pearl necklace, look for one with varying lengths or a long strand that you can knot in the middle.

Rhinestones and diamonds
Opulent and over the top rhinestone configurations and diamonds are synonymous with The Great Gatsby look. In the 1920s women were dressing up with oversized stud earrings, large cocktail rings, and intricate necklaces. To save a dime, go for rhinestone costume jewelry over the real diamond alternative.

Tassels
Swing into 1920s style with tassels! Long earrings with bejeweled tasseled endings and necklaces that flare at the end are the perfect Daisy Buchanan look.

Head Pieces
Daisy wears a pretty jeweled headband for part of The Great Gatsby movie. This is the quintessential piece will have you looking like one of the flappers at Gatsby's parties in no time.

Wedding Jewelry: Round-Up

If you have a wedding this spring or summer it's time to start honing in on the details...like your jewelry! Choosing your wedding jewelry is a very important decision as your special day (and your jewelry!) will be immortalized in photographs. Years down the road you'll likely still have a framed wedding photo hanging around and your kids will want to see the day you married their Daddy.

As you can see, choosing your bridal jewelry is a very serious decision. You'll want to look for something that can stand the test of time and fits your style. Are you normally outgoing and love show-stopping pieces? Then going bigger with a statement type piece is ok. If you're normally understated and classic, you'll want to look for daintier, classic wedding jewelry like rhinestones and pearls.

I for one love bejeweled hair pieces and clips for an unexpected sparkle and charm.  Swoop your hair back to one side with a vintage pin or have a clip poking out from underneath your up-do.

Here's a look at some of my favourite wedding appropriate jewelry pieces available today.

Friendship Bracelets: My Latest DIY

Happy Friday! This week flew by for me. Maybe it's the hint of warmer weather we've been having and the increased sunshine that's making the days seem brighter, fresher, faster.

I wanted to share these fun friendship bracelets I've been making in anticipation for summer. I've ordered a bunch of colourful cord and fun rhinestones in hopes of making piles of these bright bracelets to spice up my arm party (and my friends'!).  I am going to do a giveaway with one of these beauties when I reach 200 twitter followers or 200 followers on Jolie Jouel - whichever comes first! Friendship bracelets are a fun way to add colour to your outfit and they're easy to stack up with your other favourite bracelets.

Have a great weekend!

Trend Spotting: Neon + Rhinestone Necklaces

This look is classic meets trendy; colorful meets demure; and ladylike meets street-style. The trend I am talking about is taking the classic rhinestone necklace and adding in bright pops of neon color. This trend has been popping up in many of my favorite stores and offers a fun and modern way to incorporate fancy rhinestones into your day-to-day style. From Tom Binns and Shourouk to American Eagle and Club Monaco, there is a neon rhinestone necklace out there for everyone!

Some of my favorites below!

5. Adia Kibur, Short Neon Stone Necklace
8. Club Monaco, Poppy Crystal Necklace
10. DANNIJO, Capucine

DIY Friday: Embellished Friendship Bracelets

Yesterday I stumbled upon the Stylish Wanderer's Bedroom Tour on Teen Vogue. First of all, I had no idea she was so young (she's 16) - I feel like she's blogging forever! And secondly, I fell in love with all of her quirky jewelry. Here are my favorite shots below:

When I saw the studded friendship bracelets I instantly need to know more. Turns out they're My Little Fisheye spike friendship bracelets from Lo & Chlo. They're so cute and the spikes add a little edge and interest to the usually campy friendship bracelet.

It got me thinking about friendship bracelets and how fun they are to DIY.  I can remember spending countless hours as a kid with embroidery thread safety-pinned to my jeans creating fun bracelets.

Honestly...WTF has some awesome DIY friendship bracelets up their site. Check out the photos here and then head on over to their site for more detailed step-by-step instructions. They've done a seriously fantastic job with three different DIY friendship bracelets: one with rhinestones, one with spikes, and one with chain. I can't wait to try it for myself! I think I'll start with the rhinestone beauty.
