Do or Don't? Arm Bands

It's no secret that I am a fan of Catbird and all of the lovely designers whose jewelry they sell at their store.  I am on their site at least once a day scouring for new finds and mentally rearranging my wishlists.  Yesterday I saw this The Bearhead Factory Arm Band under their new items and it made me stop in my tracks. Are arm bands coming back? There was a time when they were ultra cool - made popular by people on opposite ends of the style spectrum like Sienna Miller and Pamela Anderson.  Wow, never thought I'd mention Pamela Anderson on this blog, but there you have it.

Tell me, so you think arm bands are a Do or a Don't? Are they rocker-chic or too tough/grunge to be cool?

Celebrity Style: Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba is an actress, a multi-tasking mom, and an entrepreneur. Despite a busy lifestyle, Jessica always manages to look stylish and put together - right down the fine details of her accessories.  I for one love Jessica's style. At times she has a rocker-chic vibe, while at other times a more whimsical bohemian vibe, and the next day she'll make ultra preppy look cool. One thing that remains the same no matter what her style? Her killer jewelry.

A few photos of Jessica Alba's enviable jewelry collection below!
pc: stylehive.com / sylebistro.com / lifefashiontrends.com / prenses-style / stylegoddessblog.com / weheartit.com

Style tips:
Go for chunky necklaces. Jessica loves a statement necklace for day and evening, casual and formal.  Chunky necklaces are youthful and fun.  Don't know where to start? Jessica is a big fan of Gemma Redux, so check out that collection first!

Stack your bracelets. Jessica also loves an arm party! Go for mixed metals and don't forget to add in a few fun pops of color.

Wear earrings with formal outfits. While Jessica's go to accessory is undoubtedly the statement necklace, she tends to switch things up while dressing-up.  You'll often see Jess on the red carpet in a stunning dress and breathtaking earrings. Take a page out of Jessica's book and try retiring your necklaces for a night out in favor of a pair of statement earrings. You'll be glad you did!

DIY Friday: Pounded Silver Bracelet

A friend of mine recently asked me to make her a silver bracelet. So today I decided to play around with a few ideas.  Some of looked really pretty but to be honest, weren't the most comfortable on the wrist. After about 3 different designs I decided that perhaps simplest design is the best.

What I did was take a thick piece of sterling silver wire, pounded it into a wavy textured flat piece,  and curved it to fit the wrist. Pretty simple indeed, but it's actually super comfortable and very pretty.

Here are the detailed steps if you want to try your hand at your own pounded silver bracelet.

You will need: Silver wire, snips, pliers, hammer, and a drill.
Step 1: Cut about 4 - 5" of wire (depending on wrist size). You need less wire than will fit around your wrist because as you pound the wire it will get longer.
Step 2: The most important step, start pounding! Use your hammer to flatten out the wire and create an interesting texture. You can see the difference between the round wire and flattened silver on the right.
Step 3: Bend the silver into a bangle shape.
Step 4: Drill a small hole in each end of the bracelet.
Step 5: Add a jump ring to each end.
Step 6: Add a clasp.
And there you have it! A dainty, textured, silver bracelet made just by you.  Can't you picture this bracelet layered up with your other favorites for an awesome arm party?

This or That: Scarab Cuff vs. Scarab Bracelet

I am a big fan of Robyn Rhodes eponymous jewelry line. I am loving all of her Egyptian inspired pieces, especially the ones with scarabs! They're just so cool looking.

Robyn Rhodes has two bracelets with scarabs - one is a chunky bangle, Lorna, and one is a coiled bracelet, Neisha.  Which one do you like more? The bangle or the bracelet? Both have a gold finish and both are scarab heavy. Let me know in the comments below which one gets your vote!

Shop Spotlight: a-thread

I found a pin of a leather bow bracelet on my Pinterest and clicked through to find out more. What I found was an adorable shop named a-thread.

a-thread is run by super-sibling duo, Kevin and Jin.  They began a-thread with the vision of creating a fashion AND community minded business. Their motto is to “shop and effect” – which means you can look good, while doing good.  The few dollars a-thread donates from each sale add up to big dollars that changes lives. Five per cent of every sale will go straight to the charity of your choice. Currently, their charity partners include Children of the Night, LA Animal Services, Kiva, and Thirst Relief International. I love this idea!

Here are my favorite picks from a-thread's site!

Summer Steal

I love a bright statement necklace as much as the next girl, but sometimes it's hard to justify spending hundreds of dollars on something that you'll only wear in one season. So when I found this bright, geometric Baublebar Triad necklace for $28 I just had to share it. It's the perfect statement necklace for summer. The best part? It comes in four swoon-worthy colors.

Have fun choosing the one that's most "you"!

Do or Don't: Beyond Dangly Earrings

Confession: Pretty Little Liars is my guilty pleasure.  As I watched this week (as I do every week) I couldn't help but notice Ashley Benson's character, Hanna, foot-long chain earrings. These earrings dangled past the jaw line, past her chin, and kept going past her shoulders. Talk about statement earrings! I usually have bare lobes unless I am dressing up for a night out, so these really stood out to me. What do you think about this long chain "duster" trend, is it a Do or Don't?

Arden B earrings

If you're into the look, here are some super long earrings to choose from!

1. Boticca, Warrior Helmet Earrings - Long
2. ASOS, Tassel Drop Earrings
3. H&M, Earrings with Long Chains
4. Max & Chloe, Long chain earrings
5. Cara Couture, 'Tribal' Chain Fringe Statement Earrings
6. MALENE BIRGER, Oreck Earrings
7. endless, Chain Shoulder Duster
8. Mrs H, Silk Tassel Earrings
9. Jules Smith, Cairo Pyramid Earrings with Long Chain
10. Giles & Brother, Taki Long Silver Oxide & Hematite Earrings

Ps - Pretty Little Liars showcases has some pretty good fashion and accessories. I usually like Aria and Spencer's outfits the most. Do you watch the show? Which character do you relate most to?

Father's Day Gift Guide

It's not often that I have men in mind while I write this blog.  Most men I know wear little to no jewelry (except for a wedding ring).  But with Father's Day around the corner, it got me thinking, would Dad wear jewelry if he received it as a gift? I am sure that it totally depends on the man, but if your father is hip enough to rock a little bling I've compiled a few really good choices, just in time for Father's Day.

Without further ado, a little something the men:

Cocktail Please / Grenade Smile / Theia Necklace / The Ceramic 51-30 / The Superhero II SS / Medium or Rare / Nut Necklace / Machine Gun Love / Titan Factory Ring / Anchor / Twig Cuff / Baby Switchblade

Line Lust: VERAMEAT

When I first discovered VERAMEAT I was blown away by the uniqueness and beauty of the collection. Each piece is delightfully unexpected and beyond quirky. Quirky enough to be divided into subcategories like Spine, Vampire, and Monster. Would you like to wear a dinosaur eating fried chicken? Or have a vampire jaw encircling your finger? Into Piglets suckling from their mother? If so, you'll also love Verameat.

Hand-crafted in New York City from such fine materials as ecologically sound recycled silver and pure 14k gold, designer Vera Balyura creates imaginative wearable sculptures for individual flair.

Here are a few of my favorite pieces from her line. It was hard to narrow it down even this much! I seriously love it all.
Puppies / Spine Duster / Skeleton Thumbs Up / Sabertooth Tiger Sprinkles Donut / Finding Goldfish Coy / Yogi / One Love Pony Kiss / Hip Shark / Vampire Crown / Nature Vs. Nurture / Antler Magic / Mystery Hugs / Get You / Hibernation Hump / Ibsens Buck / Brains of Steel

Enjoy getting lost in the magical world of Verameat!

This or That: Tassel Vs. Gem

I love bracelets with a little extra flair. Whether it be a fun charm that dangles off onto the wrist or a flirty tassel that swishes as you move, I love a little something extra on the wrist.  When it comes to bracelet flair, which do you prefer: the tassel or the gem?

Both bracelets Lauren Elan. Tassel, Rhys. Gem, Briah.
Tell me, which one do you prefer? Both are so gorgeous, it's going to be a tough choice!
