Do or Don't: Faux Multiple Piercings

When all of my friends were getting 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th (...) holes punched in their ears in high school I was always too timid or unsure enough to commit another wee puncture. Now when I see people rocking numerous earrings and connecting their studs with chains and fun ear cuffs, I am at times a little jealous. My lobes go bare most days, so it's probably a good thing that I only got the one piercing, but a small part of me wishes I had the option to create a fun ear-stack. Has that term been used before? Ear stack? I like it.

When I saw this floating earring by Anita Ko, I wondered if this could be the solution to my fickle ear piecing woes. I could keep the one small hole in my lobe but get the effect of multiple piercings. Genius! Now if only we could do something about that price tag...

What do you think about the floating faux pierced look? Is it a do or a don't? Have you seen any more affordable alternatives that give the same look?

DIY Friday: Gemstone Keychain

My keychain round-up from earlier this week was a lot of fun to put together but it got me thinking about making a unique version of my own.  I had some chunky blue agate stones lying around that didn't work out for another project, so I decide to use them here! You'll also need some chunky metal chain, a keychain ring, some jump rings, a jumble of thin chain, and 20 gauge wire.

Let's get started!

Start by cutting making a loop in one end of the wire and wrap around base to finish.

Drop your stone down onto the wire and repeat the same step above (loop with wrapping) to finish.

Open a jump ring and slip it through the top loop of your stone and through one end of the chunky metal chain. Close.

Attach the key ring to the other end of the chunky chain.

Cut varying lengths of the small chain and thread them onto an open jump ring.

Attach the jump ring with fringe through the loop at the top of your gemstone.

Open another jump ring and loop the bottom ends of the small chains onto the ring and then close the ring through the loop on the bottom of your stone.

Attach your keys and enjoy!

Let me know what you think and if you're going to try this keychain DIY!

If crafting or time aren't on your side, I also have lots more of these for sale --> $15 :) Email me if interested! joliejouel@gmail.com

Introducing Warby Parker's 1922 Collection

Warby Parker is launching a new line of eyewear today and Jolie Jouel readers are getting the first look!

The new line - The 1922 Collection - is inspired by the trends and retro style of the year 1922.  The collection is perfect for those who are looking for a retro throw back, something unique, and have a soft spot for the year that James Joyce published Ulysses and T.S. Eliot published The Wasteland; Eugene O’Neill won a Pulitzer; Louis Armstrong moved to Chicago; and the dances were a hoot.

The line features three three new frames, available for eyeglasses and in a sunglasses version, with retro details set in custom acetate and lightweight stainless steel.
And just like all Warby Parker collections, for every pair sold, they will distribute a pair to someone in need. So you can feel good while looking good.

Enjoy perusing the looks below! And be sure to let me know what you think about the new collection in the comments.

Trend Spotting: Bug Jewelry

Spring showers bring May flowers...and bugs and insects and pests! Flower inspired jewelry has dominated jewelry trends this spring but I've started to notice a fierce competitor - bugs!  There is something cute and edgy about wearing a bee on your finger (instead of running from them) making insect trinkets fun to wear.  I was inspired by a gold bee ring that I saw in a Glamour Mag article (here) and decided to dig up a few more buzz worthy friends for you.

2. Love Bug Charm, Juicy Couture
3. Bee Necklace, Psyche
4. Bug Ring, Shopbop
5. Carved Flower Bug Hinged Bangle, Betsey Johnson
6. Bug Stretch Bracelet, ASOS
7. Boxchain Necklace with Bug Detail, ASOS
8. Bug Earrings, ASOS
9. Unwanted Visitor Winged Bangle, Kate Spade

Line Lust: Kitsch

I am obsessed with pretty, soft hair ties and delicate jewelry. Kitsch does both of these things to perfection! Their hair ties come in fun patterns, colors, and textures. My favorites are the tie-dyed and ombre hair ties that can be doubled as fun bracelets. They also have a jewelry line and I am specifically drawn to the delicate necklace and earring sets sold on fun Polaroid cards. This little evil eye is the perfect everyday piece. I wish all of my necklaces were this length. As a fairly small person, I often find that even "short" necklaces are a bit too long for me, hitting awkwardly at my shirt neckline (instead of delicately below my collar bone).

Hair ties c/o Kitsch / All Eyes On You necklace c/o Kitsch / First knuckle ring, Catbird / Druzy bracelet and Ombre bead bracelet by me!

You can get your own hair ties and jewelry from Kitsch on their website or at Anthropologie, Nordstrom, Urban Outfitters, Free People or find your local retail locations here.

Get the Look: The Great Gatsby

My book club is tonight and this month we read The Great Gatsby. Somehow this book slipped past me as mandatory reading in High School so I was thrilled that it was chosen as one of our books for the year. The book was fabulous and I couldn't help but imagine the fashion and jewelry that the ladies would have been wearing to Gatsby's parties. The previews for the movie definitely helped in my visualization and I cannot wait to see the story brought to life on the big screen.

I found this photo of Carey Mulligan dressed as Daisy Buchanan on the cover of Vogue and may have squealed at the all of the vintage, art deco jewelry she has piled on.

How to Get The Great Gatsby Look

Pearls
Nothings screams 'the roaring '20s' like layers of pearls. Look for stacked strands for both wrists and necks. If looking to invest in a pearl necklace, look for one with varying lengths or a long strand that you can knot in the middle.

Rhinestones and diamonds
Opulent and over the top rhinestone configurations and diamonds are synonymous with The Great Gatsby look. In the 1920s women were dressing up with oversized stud earrings, large cocktail rings, and intricate necklaces. To save a dime, go for rhinestone costume jewelry over the real diamond alternative.

Tassels
Swing into 1920s style with tassels! Long earrings with bejeweled tasseled endings and necklaces that flare at the end are the perfect Daisy Buchanan look.

Head Pieces
Daisy wears a pretty jeweled headband for part of The Great Gatsby movie. This is the quintessential piece will have you looking like one of the flappers at Gatsby's parties in no time.

1. Head piece, Tiffany & Co.
2. Art deco ring, Barney's
3. Pearl bracelet, Accessorize
4. Art Deco silver bracelet, Amazon
5. Vendome Earrings, Lulu Frost
6. Green Pendant necklace, Max & Chloe
7. Flapper Tassel necklace, Max & Chloe
8. Silver and Pearl bracelet, Ben-Amun
9. Immortality Necklace, Lulu Frost
10. Muse Earrings, Lulu Frost

Do or Don't: Double Time Tellers

There was a recent Duck Dynasty episode that featured a stylish, city-slicker, photographer taking photos of Phil, Kay, and their beloved dogs. Hilarity ensues as city and country ideals collide. At one point, Phil points out that the photographer is wearing two watches, shaking his head in confusion over his redundant accessories.

Is wearing two watches in-vogue or totally over the top? Something only rednecks can't comprehend or something that only famous pet photographer can pull off?  Sound off in the comments below!

Still lusting after this watch and this one, too. Should I get both and wear them together!? ;)

Celebrity Jewelry Style: Rachel McAdams

First things first, how is it possible that Rachel McAdams looks amazing with every single hair colour? That's just not fair. Aside from seeming refreshingly humble, being a fellow Canadian, and a true style chameleon, Rachel has great accessorizing prowess. Never over doing it, and choosing pieces that fit beautifully with her attire, Rachel has a simple yet dramatic jewelry style. Playing off her ever-changing hair colour, she seems to choose retro glam earrings while blonde, edgier pieces (like stacked rings) while a redhead, and dramatic classics (such as a bold cocktail ring) as a brunette. When hair colour becomes your main accessory, everything else is just icing on the cake!

Maternity Fashion: The Maxi Dress

Waking up and just throwing on whatever you feel inspired by is not as option when you're 8 months pregnant. I am just starting the eighth month of pregnancy (31 weeks) and while I've been doing alright with creatively dressing the bump, I am guessing I am about to have to get a lot more creative - the bigger she gets the fewer options I am left with. I am not a huge fan of maternity clothes (aside from maternity jeans and pants, which are a necessity in my eyes) so I've been trying to buy regular flowy tops and clothes that seem to stretch and expand with my belly.

The maxi dress is a perfect example of something you can buy this season from a "regular" store that will fit your pregnant belly and stretch with you as your bump grows.  This one, from Tart Collections, is not maternity, but works beautifully as a comfortable, stylish maternity dress. If you're pregnant this spring or summer, I would definitely recommend this dress.  It's stylish, comfortable, and easy to throw on in warm weather. It's a maternity fashion no brainer.

Wedding Jewelry: Round-Up

If you have a wedding this spring or summer it's time to start honing in on the details...like your jewelry! Choosing your wedding jewelry is a very important decision as your special day (and your jewelry!) will be immortalized in photographs. Years down the road you'll likely still have a framed wedding photo hanging around and your kids will want to see the day you married their Daddy.

As you can see, choosing your bridal jewelry is a very serious decision. You'll want to look for something that can stand the test of time and fits your style. Are you normally outgoing and love show-stopping pieces? Then going bigger with a statement type piece is ok. If you're normally understated and classic, you'll want to look for daintier, classic wedding jewelry like rhinestones and pearls.

I for one love bejeweled hair pieces and clips for an unexpected sparkle and charm.  Swoop your hair back to one side with a vintage pin or have a clip poking out from underneath your up-do.

Here's a look at some of my favourite wedding appropriate jewelry pieces available today.

3. Samantha Wills, Velvet Champagne Earrings
4. Samantha Wills, Come Away with Me Earrings
5. Anthropologie, Tulle Tendril Bib
