Lately...

Here's the jewelry I've been loving this week:

What's in My Bag, Baby?

I love them, you love them, we all love them - a What's in My bag post! I am always curious as to what other stylish and practical ladies carry around with them on a day to day basis.  So I thought, why not share my necessities with you guys? I for one carry too much...as you'll soon see.  But if it weren't for the heavy books, I'd probably be doing ok...and have fewer shoulder aches. But this girl needs her books.

Without further ado, allow me to introduce you to my Coach Cambridge Zip Top Tote.  I got this tote two years after seeing Karla Deras from Karla's Closet model it here.
Isn't she lovely?  And here is what she's filled with:

1. A pretty notebook: A necessity for any writer. You never know when you're going to get a brilliant idea.

2. Dr.Hauschka Melissa Day Cream: This cream smells divine - like lemon meringue pie. It claims to meet the needs of sensitive combination skin conditions. Rich in Lemon balm, combined with other extracts of medicinal herbs to soothe irritable, reddened skin, keep oily zones clear and matte while helping the skin to retain moisture in dry areas, the balancing Melissa Day Cream refines the skin and leaves the complexion soft and even. I believe it does.

3. Card case: My beloved Urban Outfitters card case (my wallet) has garnered me more compliments and copy cats over the year than imaginable.

4. Revlon lip care: My two favorite lippies of the moment. ColorBurst Lip Butter in Gumdrop and ColorBurst Lipstick in Plum

5. Way too many emergency bracelets.  You never know.  [Misels from Lauren Elan, a bunch of silver ones from me, and a few Purple Paparazzi stackers]

6. Roll on perfume: This isn't my everyday scent (I usually wear Miss Dior or Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb) but Pink Sugar is a roll on perfume that's sweet and powdery and perfect for throwing in your bag.

7. Benjamin Moore paint chip: We just bought a new house and are in the throws of painting and decorating. I keep this paint chip with me as I shop around for interior furniture.

8. Cell phone: Yes, I am one of the last few people on planet earth with a BlackBerry. I have the white torch and while I love some features (the key pad) I loathe others (the sub-par camera and fewer app options).

9. Current book: I am a big reader so I don't like to go off places without a book in my bag. You know, in case I get stuck in line somewhere. Or need to avoid chatting to strangers.

10. Coffee cup: I am also a big coffee drinker. I must admit, this isn't always in my bag, but if I am headed to a coffee shop to do some writing, I try to remember to bring this along.

11. Nail polishes: One of the few items in my bag I rarely use while out and about. I am not quite sure why they're in there, but I always carry at least one shade of nailpolish with me.  Loving Essie's Mob Square right now. It's the perfect bright pink for summer.

12. A scarf: Yes, even in the summer I carry a scarf with me. You never know when the air-conditioner is going to start blasting or when your outfit will need a little extra flair. Loving this lightweight white, black, and grey tie-dyed number for spring.

13. Sunglasses: I always have one or two pairs with me. Pictured here: Spy's Dallas aviators. So cool.

Trend Spotting: Nautical Jewelry

Ahoy, mateys! Summer is just around the corner...and it's showing.  Fashion has taken a turn to all things nautical (think stripes, boat shoes, red and navy color combos, and blazers with gold buttons) and this includes nautical inspired jewelry (think ropes, anchors, and sea horses).  If you're ready to sail the high seas this summer (or at least look like you could hop onto a sailboat at any moment) check out the nautical inspired jewelry I've rounded up below.

Do or Don't: Bow Tie Necklaces

It's no secret that I love tiny little pendants. In fact, most of the jewelry I make and buy are fun little charms.  Last week I made this bow tie pendant made with three triangles cut out of silver and soldered together.

What do you think about menswear as dainty jewelry for women? Is it a Do or a Don't?

DIY Friday: Embellished Friendship Bracelets

Yesterday I stumbled upon the Stylish Wanderer's Bedroom Tour on Teen Vogue. First of all, I had no idea she was so young (she's 16) - I feel like she's blogging forever! And secondly, I fell in love with all of her quirky jewelry. Here are my favorite shots below:
pc: Teen Vogue

When I saw the studded friendship bracelets I instantly need to know more. Turns out they're My Little Fisheye spike friendship bracelets from Lo & Chlo. They're so cute and the spikes add a little edge and interest to the usually campy friendship bracelet.

It got me thinking about friendship bracelets and how fun they are to DIY.  I can remember spending countless hours as a kid with embroidery thread safety-pinned to my jeans creating fun bracelets.

Honestly...WTF has some awesome DIY friendship bracelets up their site. Check out the photos here and then head on over to their site for more detailed step-by-step instructions. They've done a seriously fantastic job with three different DIY friendship bracelets: one with rhinestones, one with spikes, and one with chain. I can't wait to try it for myself! I think I'll start with the rhinestone beauty.

Shop Spotlight: Catbird NYC

I can't quite remember how I stumbled upon Catbird but I am certainly glad that I did.  Catbird is located in the center Williamsburg, NY, where "the asthma rates are high and the tree quotient is low." But for those of us outside of Brooklyn, fear not, they have a strong online presence as well.
While the emphasis is on jewelry at this quirky shop, there is also always a wide variety of other fun stuff such as: glassware, terrariums, candlesticks, cards, water bottles, tooth fairy boxes, candles, art, boxes and trays, compasses, old fashioned toys, fancy things to put in your hair...the list goes on.

While I love their other trinkets and treasures, my real attraction to the store is because of the fun jewelry it carries.  Below I've compiled a list of my favorite pieces of jewelry that Catbird carries.  Think of it as my giant wishlist.

This order makes a little sense if you have the mind of a crazy person. Left to right, top to bottom-ish:

Celebrity Jewelry Style: Sienna Miller

I went to the hair salon yesterday and, as usual, scoured the internet for photos of lust-worthy hair to bring with me. This inevitably brought me to photos of Sienna Miller (because she always has the best shade of wheat blonde locks and dreamy layers, duh). As I was looking at the photos, I couldn't help but notice that the girl also knows how to rock some pretty stylish jewelry!

Known for her boho-chic style (are we still allowed to say that word?) Sienna dresses and accessorizes in an effortless way.  Whether she's on the red carpet or on the streets of London, with either a statement necklace or beachy earrings, Sienna knows how to accent her stylish outfits with ease.

Liking her free-spirited style? Have a look below for inspiration!

Purple Progress

Well, this is a big step for me: I am wearing earrings! I have to be honest, I haven't worn earrings in a very long time. I used to love wearing silver hoops, fun studs, and the ever-popular chandelier earrings; but then for some reason, I just completely stopped.  Bare lobes have been my MO for about a year now but when Purple Paparazzi sent over these amethyst stunners I just had to give them a try.  I am not going to lie, I feel a little bit fancy! But in a good and polished and grown-up way. I think this is the beginning of a beautiful earring relationship.

The Best Jewelry of the MET Gala 2012

The MET Gala always brings out the cream of the crop in terms of gowns, jewels, and celebrities. This year was no exception. While there were dozens of jaw dropping gowns (you can find coverage on dozens of other sites!) I was most interested in the show stopping jewelry. This year the ladies didn't hold back - big earrings, stacked wrists and statement necklaces flooded the red carpet.
Here are my faves:

Gwyneth Paltrow: Anna Hu Haute Joaillerie Summer Bamboo earrings.

Kate Bosworth: Repossi clip-on Diamond Earrings.

Karolina Kurkova: Fred Leighton rings.

Diane Kruger: Fred Leighton necklace.

Jessica Stam: Lorraine Schwartz bracelets.

Jaime King: Bulgari Serpenti necklace.

January Jones: Cartier gold necklace with brilliant-cut diamonds and turquoise cabochons.

Sarah Jessica Parker: Fred Leighton Victorian Cuff Bangles.

All photos courtesy of PopSugar with the exception of Jessica Stam which is courtesy of ohnotheydidnt and Jaime King from the DailyMail.
